“The course was very engaging. Specifically, I liked that we worked problems on the board because during that time, it showed if you really understood the concepts." -Christopher J.

Concept-based Learning

At MathSP, our instructors use a novel approach to teaching called Concept-based Learning. A strong understanding of mathematical concepts is important to performing well in any Math subject or standardized test. Our students learn specific concepts and strategies then practice working through problems that relate to a particular concept or strategy.

Concept-based Learning allows students to apply a single concept to many different problems. Course problems are grouped according to concept so that students can grasp the consistencies between similar problems. Students understand that if they are comfortable with a finite number of concepts, then they are able to take their knowledge of the concepts and apply it to an infinite number of problems.

Advantages to Concept-based Learning

Concept-based Learning helps students to:

  • Learn and master essential concepts that make up the backbone of standardized, state, and computer-based exam questions
  • Identify the specific concept tested on a particular problem
  • Solve problems grouped by concept to see parallels among different problems stemming from similar concepts
  • Recognize and understand the numerous ways that concepts are tested
